Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will officially release on October 23, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and for the first time, on Nintendo Switch 2. This installment promises to offer gargantuan content with four main pillars, namely the Campaign, the traditional multiplayer mode, the Kill Block mode, and the DMZ mode. The latter, which will be available from October 20 in early access, has just been presented. Here are the specifics of this extraction-oriented experience.

The DMZ mode, a more open experience

The DMZ mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will take the form of an extraction shooter that will require exploring Hajin, an exclusion zone. The approach will be much more open and flexible than other experiences. Indeed, the map will be a large sandbox teeming with life. Players will thus encounter rival factions and roaming patrols. The goal will be simple: complete orders, hunt down lieutenants, and exfiltrate with loot, all while surviving various present dangers. Scripted missions will add depth to the experience.

This is not entirely new since the DMZ mode was introduced in November 2022 in Warzone 2.0. However, Infinity Ward was limited in implementing certain features and possibilities. The studio wanted to pursue its ideas and develop what could not be done. The team collected community feedback to evolve this ambitious mode and take it to an unprecedented level. Now, all elements are persistent, clues push you to explore the world, objectives evolve and require constant adaptation, not to mention that an operator's actions can make them a target. Explanations!

Between main missions and dynamic operations

The solo Campaign is not the only mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to benefit from scripting. Indeed, the main missions of the DMZ mode will add narrative elements to encourage completing objectives while learning more about the universe. Thus, each mission will immerse you in a piece of the story. Completing the objectives will allow gathering intelligence until you have enough elements to piece together the plot.

In addition to these main missions, coded to deliver story elements, players will participate in dynamic operations. In this case, each operator will have to adapt in real-time to the challenges of the mission. Their skills will be tested as objectives evolve. Gathering information, retrieving objects, eliminating lieutenants, assaulting tracking towers, fighting against different defense levels, etc., improvisation will likely be your best asset. In any case, your adaptability will be put to the test.

Progressing will be an art, while bounties will spice up the games

The starting point of each deployment in DMZ mode will be the forward operating base or F.O.B. for short. This place, which must not appear on radars, is the equivalent of your camp. In other words, it is the necessary refuge to prepare for your next intervention, use what has been gained, and recover from previous efforts. It thus offers the possibility of using your XP to develop your operator's traits, unlocking certain skills, whether they are a Warrior, a Scout, or a Survivalist. Unlike the first experience in 2022, this time, the bag and gear are permanent. It will therefore be important to search the areas to collect money and materials to best prepare for the next deployment. Of course, since the elements are permanent, it means they can be lost. In short, survive, progress, eliminate opponents, explore every corner, and return with your hands full.

Finally, the development team has thought of a system, similar to what has already been observed in more traditional multiplayer, to spice up the games. It's the bounty system. Specifically, if agents engage to achieve their objectives, others are mainly present on Hajin to fight. Beyond the pleasure of eliminating opponents and taking their tags, this mainly allows you to collect a tidy sum thanks to the bounty associated with it. Be careful, to get paid, you still need to manage to return to the base with them... Each of your actions can make you a target. A little tip not to neglect: remember to look up, the crows will fly over the corpses.
