While January 1, 2026, marked the beginning of the new year, this special day is also associated with the release of the final part of Season 5 of Stranger Things. Fans of the hit series by Matt and Ross Duffer were thus able to watch the finale of the story, bringing an end to the adventures of our heroes in the Upside Down. Although the two brothers have confirmed that there will be no Season 6, this does not mean the end of the franchise. Proof of this, from April 23, everyone will be able to discover an animated spin-off series called Stranger Things: Chronicles of 1985. Netflix invites you to discover a first glimpse of it.
An event series
July 15, 2016, we launch Netflix. The home screen highlights a brand new series. Its name? Stranger Things. Its promise? To discover an adventure set in the 80s in a fictional town, Hawkins. We then follow Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Mike (Finn Wolfhard), three young children who set out to find their friend Will (Noah Schnapp), kidnapped by a mysterious creature. Other characters join the plot, including Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a young girl with strange powers. Viewers are then swept away into the story, discovering along the way the Upside Down, an alternative dimension.
The love affair is immediate. Almost everyone is talking about the event series, eagerly awaiting the sequel. Season 2 arrives in 2017. The wait to discover Season 3 is a bit longer, with it only airing from July 2019. Then, with the COVID-19 pandemic, filming gets delayed. Nevertheless, the Duffer brothers are determined to see the project through, while satisfying fans' expectations. It then takes until 2022 to discover a Season 4 divided into two parts. Then, again, Season 5 is slow to arrive. More than three years is the time it took to discover the beginning of it. To refresh memories, Netflix even concocted summaries of previous seasons and offered the first five minutes of Season 5 to allow the most impatient to bide their time. And still, the episodes were not released at the same time but in waves. The finale could therefore be watched from January 1, 2026.
An extension of the universe
Of course, after almost 10 years of following the adventures of this group of teenagers and their entourage, the goodbyes are difficult. Fortunately, it was only a goodbye, as announced in April 2025! Indeed, from April 23, 2026, the franchise will make its big return. Not a Season 6 as promised but a spin-off in the form of an animated series. Stranger Things: Chronicles of 1985, that's its name, will invite us to discover a narrative arc that takes place between the events of Seasons 2 and 3. Fans will be delighted, the main characters of the series will return (but they will not be voiced by the original actors), with a modeling that clearly echoes the original models.
This time, it's Eric Robles (The X's, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Glitch Techs) who is in charge of the project, under the supervision of Matt and Ross Duffer, both in production. Even though Netflix wants to keep the surprise regarding the script, we know that the action will take place during the winter and that new monsters will make their appearance. Of course, to respect the very essence of the original series, our group will have to try to solve a paranormal mystery. The style aims to pay homage to the animated series of the 80s, to be well in tune with the era. While waiting to know how many episodes will be broadcast, Netflix invites you to discover the universe of this animated series through a teaser video.
