Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a reinterpretation of the original opus released in 1996. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the two studios working on this project, will invite players to rediscover the essence of the first installment while offering a reimagined version of each environment, along with modernized gameplay. It will be possible to explore Peru, ancient Greece, Atlantis, and Egypt. The land of pyramids and pharaohs has received special attention, as evidenced by the development team in the new video released.
Monuments, mysteries, and challenging puzzles
While Peru and ancient Greece are iconic locations in Lara Croft's adventures, it's obvious that Egypt is a mythical destination. Between the pyramids, tombs, mythology, and the vastness of the environment that tends to feel isolated, there's no place more conducive to adventure and mystery-solving. With the original Tomb Raider approaching its 30th anniversary, it's undeniable that the development team of the time had to make concessions due to technical constraints. Even though the result was memorable, it's clear that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will offer a much richer and more detailed environment. This will be made possible through the use of Unreal Engine 5, promising stunning visuals.
As indicated by the participants in the video, the proof is that the Egyptian monuments will display hieroglyphs in accordance with the location and its history. Thus, just a few beams of light will be enough to highlight the grooves they form on the surfaces. It's also the most expansive location, giving the feeling of being alone against the environment. Lara Croft will have to rely solely on herself and her observational skills to solve puzzles and avoid traps. Of course, as we've seen in previous developer diaries, this new game will give players more control through more free movements, while retaining the heroine's characteristic moves.
A unique place to (re)discover
In any case, as Jason Epps, the design lead at Crystal Dynamics, specifies, "just like in the original game, Egypt is the most intellectually stimulating level of Atlantis." The reason is simple, "the puzzles are more complex." Indeed, the development team took advantage of the power of current machines to take some liberties. They did not hesitate to diverge from the original title to "create puzzles focused on the Egyptian pantheon, in order to eliminate many repetitions."
This ensures a constant gaming pleasure, avoids some frustration, and offers a more coherent progression. The way to approach the environment will therefore be unique. The scenery, story, and puzzles will form a whole that should allow you to feel the atmosphere of a true archaeological expedition. The city of Khamoon will invite you to explore every corner. Sometimes you will even have to retrace your steps to discover all the secrets it holds. As a reminder, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be available from February 12, 2027, on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
