Everything you need to know about the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is undoubtedly one of the best games in the franchise. A true masterpiece released on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, it managed to capture the hearts of all the players of the time. Despite the years, the title remains a true reference. This year, Nintendo will offer a remake, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
An iconic timeless game
2026 is a special year for the The Legend of Zelda franchise as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Despite the years, it has not lost its charm, with Link's adventures continuing to captivate players. While many games have left their mark over time, there is one that stands out: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Released in 1998 on Nintendo 64, it was the first installment to transition the franchise into 3D, and in the most beautiful way. Even today, Nintendo's title is a video game monument, an iconic game.
In broad strokes, a young boy named Link (the game's title highlights Princess Zelda's name, but the character we control is Link) sets out on an adventure after responding to the call of the Deku Tree. His mission is simple: prevent Ganondorf from getting his hands on the Triforce, an artifact that grants great powers to its holder. During his journey, he will meet Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle and must awaken the Seven Sages to imprison Ganondorf. Several specifics punctuate the adventure, including controlling two versions of Link: his child version and his adult version.
The game shone for its story, gameplay, and the implementation of the Z-targeting system (echoing the N64 controller button used for this action). This system allows you to lock onto an enemy to fight them. It has been widely adopted in subsequent 3D games. If you didn't experience the adventure during the N64 era, Nintendo has given you several chances to catch up on this oversight. The title was ported to the GameCube in the limited edition of The Wind Waker and in The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition compilation. It is also playable on Nintendo Switch via Nintendo Switch Online. In 2011, Nintendo, supported by the Grezzo studio, even developed a remaster specifically tailored for the Nintendo 3DS. This time, the company with the mustached plumber wants to go further by offering a true remake.
A modernized adventure, with a visual overhaul
Starting November 5, it will be possible to (re)discover this gem through a remake that offers reimagined visuals, a re-recorded soundtrack, and modernized gameplay. This is Nintendo's promise, and the presentation trailer leaves no room for doubt: the power of the Nintendo Switch 2 is being utilized to give a new dimension to this epic adventure. While the kingdom of Hyrule retains its topography from that era, it gains in detail. The environments are denser, displaying additional visual elements. The story is also enriched with the addition of new dialogues and fully dubbed cinematics.
The gameplay gains flexibility as Link can now jump with a simple button press or run faster thanks to a sprint. The camera also offers more freedom as it can now be manipulated freely. Players will thus have total control of the character and the viewpoint, allowing them to appreciate the environments and battles. A plus for exploring the kingdom to help its inhabitants and retrieve the rewards hidden there. The day/night cycle has also been revised, which will bring a little nighttime surprise: new adversaries! Everyone will enjoy superior gaming comfort thanks to the addition of the Thread of Time, a feature that traces our hero's journeys while providing a concrete overview of progress and current objectives.
To overcome enemies, dungeons, and other puzzles, Link can rely on a simple yet highly effective arsenal. His trusty Kokiri sword and Deku shield will accompany him throughout the adventure, as well as his fairy slingshot for targeting distant enemies or his Deku stick, which serves as an improvised torch, not to mention the bombs and the boomerang that tirelessly returns to its thrower. Of course, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time wouldn't be what it is without the presence of the ocarina. This musical instrument plays a crucial role in the adventure as the music it produces allows changing the time of day or opening new paths. The little extra is that in addition to playing it with the controller buttons, it will be possible to hum the melodies into the Switch 2 microphone or use the Hori accessory (taking the form of a replica of the game's ocarina) specially designed for the occasion.
