The year 2027 will mark the strong return of the Tomb Raider franchise with not just one but indeed two new games. While many are waiting to discover an entirely new adventure with Tomb Raider: Catalyst, it is undeniable that everyone is eager to dive into Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the reinterpretation of the 1996 game. Release date, platforms involved, special editions, gameplay, etc., we take stock of everything you need to know.

A Monument of Video Gaming

In 1996, the Sega Saturn welcomed a brand new action-adventure game, a certain Tomb Raider signed by Core Design. We then embody Lara Croft, an archaeologist with a thirst for adventure who sets out in search of ancient relics around the world. Shortly after, it was released on PlayStation. The success was immediate, the title was praised by critics, and the franchise grew, crossing ages. Between sequels, spin-offs (like Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light), the 2007 remake, the remaster of the first trilogy, and the 2013 reboot, the series has established itself, whether by playing on nostalgia or trying new approaches. While a brand new game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, is expected next year on PCs and next-generation consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S), Amazon Game Studios will first invite you to discover Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reinterpretation of the very first installment. 

As excellent as the very first Tomb Raider may be, it must be recognized that the work accomplished in 1996 was constrained by the technical limitations of the time. The game has necessarily aged, while leaving indelible memories for those over 30. Amazon Game Studios has therefore decided to sign the return of Lara Croft on February 12, 2027, both on PC (Steam) and on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Rather than settling for a simple remake, the publisher has entrusted the mission to Crystal Dynamics (a studio working on the franchise for over 20 years) and Flying Wild Hog (Shadow Warrior, Trek to Yomi) to work on a reinterpretation of the original game. 

Thus, players will find the universe of 1996 which will return with a beautiful rejuvenation thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 5. As seen in the trailer, the game features modern graphics that flatter the retina. Of course, to discover the lost secrets of Atlantis, the development teams will revise the gameplay to make it more flexible. The goal is to offer a modern experience that echoes the roots while integrating some new features. Surprises will be discovered alongside more familiar elements. Nostalgic players can rest assured, the scene with the T-Rex will indeed be included. It was inconceivable to leave this iconic moment aside. Similarly, Lara Croft will be accompanied by her two famous pistols. Other weapons will also be unlocked. Finally, the most significant is that the game will be localized in several languages, including French, English, German, Spanish (Latin America), and Chinese.

Several Editions on the Agenda

Even though there are still a few months left before you can play it, Amazon Game Studios is already inviting you to pre-order the title on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Three editions are offered. The Standard edition sold at €59.99 includes the full game in digital download and the Survivor outfit as a pre-order bonus. For €10 more, you can opt for the Deluxe edition which adds a post-launch DLC, the Parisian Fugitive outfit and a 48-hour early access to the game. 

Finally, collectors who have a certain love for physical editions can choose the Collector's Edition. Priced at €199.99, it includes the contents of the Deluxe Edition and adds an exclusive Steelbook, a mini-artbook, a pin, a Triumvirate Talisman keychain, and a statue immortalizing the most iconic scene featuring Lara Croft facing off against a T-Rex.
