While waiting for news about Gears of War: E-Day, the game unveiled last June that will allow us to follow the story taking place 14 years before the events of the first installment, Xbox reveals a nice surprise. Gears of War, the first of its name, will be getting a brand new remaster. This will be based on Gears of War Ultimate Edition, the remastered edition of the original.
An Iconic Franchise
At the end of 2006, Epic Games released a brand new third-person shooter game resolutely focused on action. Players of the time discovered the story of Marcus Fenix and Dominic "Dom" Santiago, two characters who must face the threat of the Locusts. The title captivates with its quality visuals, its assumed gore aspect, and its intuitive gameplay. The success is such that the franchise quickly rises among the best Xbox exclusives, alongside Halo and the Forza Motorsport series. Comics, books, merchandise, etc., the franchise is fully exploited and gets sequels that are equally appreciated. This is what prompts Microsoft, at the very beginning of 2014, to buy the franchise to secure its exclusivity.
A little less than 9 years later, during the summer of 2015, the title returns with this time a remastered version tailored for the Xbox One. Gears of War Ultimate Edition, by its full name, allowed enjoying a visually more attractive version, while benefiting from a 1080p display, compared to the 720p display of the Xbox 360 version. Just before celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first installment of the saga, Xbox makes a surprise announcement: the title will have a third version called Gears of War: Reloaded.

A New Edition Tailored for the Current Generation
This latest edition will benefit from 4K resolution and will allow the Campaign mode to run at 60 frames per second, without any loading screens, while the multiplayer mode can run up to 120 frames per second. Of course, we can also expect improved visual effects, better quality shadows and reflections, and even more effective anti-aliasing.
In terms of content, The Coalition, Sumo Interactive, and Disbelief (the three studios collaborating to develop this new edition) will include all the content from the Ultimate Edition, which will of course include all the DLCs that appeared after its launch. We will therefore have access to all the maps and modes of the multiplayer, a wide selection of characters and cosmetic items, as well as the bonus act for the Campaign. Obviously, the Campaign mode can still be played in two-player co-op, while the competitive multiplayer mode will host up to 8 players.
Gears of War: Reloaded will be released on August 26th on PC, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S... and for the first time on a Sony console. You read that right, the franchise is coming to PlayStation 5. To show that we are all gamers, beyond the platform, the title will be cross-play and cross-progression. In other words, you will be able to save your game from any platform, and all players will be brought together in games, regardless of the machine used.
Finally, people who mainly play on PC and Xbox will have two additional advantages. The first is the ability to play the title via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (to enjoy it even via the Cloud) and via PC Game Pass. The second is that all people who purchased the digital edition of the Ultimate Edition before May 5, 2025, will receive a download code to get GoW Reloaded for free (as an update).
