Dune X Flight Simulator
XboxFeb 15, 20242 min read

A true flight simulator, the latest iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator has found its audience thanks to the work of Asobo Studio. The Bordeaux-based studio has delivered a version aimed at the new generation with a rendering that aims to be as realistic as possible, regularly refining the rendering of the most well-known cities with updates since its release in August 2020 on PC (Windows 10/11) and July 2021 on Xbox Series X|S. Available in the Xbox Game Pass, the title manages to attract new players, in addition to rekindling interest for those who have already played it, thanks to various updates, including prestigious collaborations. Notable integrations include the Pelican from Halo Infinite, the Top Gun: Maverick expansion, and most interestingly for us today, the arrival of content centered around Dune.

Fly over Arrakis aboard the royal ornithopter

Two weeks before the release of the film Dune: Part Two, which is set to hit theaters on February 28, Xbox is partnering with Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment to offer a free expansion allowing all Microsoft Flight Simulator players to take control of the Atreides' royal ornithopter to explore the world of Dune. As a reminder, Dune is originally a novel by Frank Herbert, which was notably adapted into a feature film in 1984 by David Lynch. More recently, Denis Villeneuve initiated a new adaptation split into two parts. Dune: Part One was released in 2021 and notably received six Oscars, including those for best production design, best cinematography, and best original score.

Missions and a message from Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler

The skies of Arrakis welcome you for three training missions, namely takeoff, landing, and free fall. Then, six activities await you to test your piloting skills aboard this craft powered by four oscillating wings. To mark the occasion, stars Timothée Chalamet (Paul Atreides in the film) and Austin Butler (aka Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen) appeared in front of the camera to immortalize this partnership.
