On October 25, 2024, all Call of Duty franchise fans officially got to discover Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the new installment developed by Raven Software (the single-player campaign) and Treyarch (the other aspects of the game). While the title quickly met with success, Activision loudly proclaimed a month later that all indicators were green. In other words, CoD BO6 is the most popular title in the franchise. Activision, the publisher, now reveals the name of the next game in the series. And, drumroll, it is none other than Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
A futuristic experience
Generally, fans of the franchise are used to a certain alternation between the series that make up the Call of Duty saga. This year is special because, after Black Ops 6, it is indeed Black Ops 7 that will be released on PC (Steam, Battle.net and Xbox PC), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Day One addition in the Game Pass Ultimate and the PC Game Pass. So, no new Modern Warfare, Infinite Warfare, or other installment. For Tyler Bahl, the head of Activision Publishing Marketing, this choice “not only gives the teams the opportunity to tap into their own creativity, but also to take advantage of the transition from the 90s to the near future of 2035 for [the] marketing.”
You got it, CoD BO7 will not be a simple sequel. Indeed, the scenario will take place more than 40 years after the events of CoD BO6. Players will be propelled to 2035. They will find David Mason and his team facing an enemy who uses fear as a weapon. Violence has increased, and the world is on the brink of chaos. To prevent it from tipping over completely, it will be necessary to fight, alone or with others through a cooperative campaign announced as “thrilling and innovative.” Of course, being a Black Ops episode, the Zombies mode will be back. Fans will be able to continue the Dark Aether storyline. The multiplayer mode will also be included with the promise of integrating new maps.
While Activision had gotten used to using several studios to produce different Call of Duty games annually, while allowing enough development time for each, this year, once again, it is the duo Treyarch and Raven Software, who worked on Black Ops 6, who are at the helm. The long teaser is tantalizing... At least until this summer and the full reveal. Until then, the publisher promises to unveil some clues and other surprises to give fans who enjoy deciphering every element something to chew on.
