The announcement of a new Call of Duty video game generally creates some excitement within the community. However, last September, instead of announcing information about the next iteration of the franchise, Activision dropped a bombshell that captured attention: the official start of a film adaptation. A few months later, we learn when this feature film will hit theaters.

An anticipation that will heighten the tension

Adapting a video game franchise into a film is not insignificant. It opens the door to new audiences and newcomers, inviting them to discover the universe. Who knows, they might then be tempted to purchase an installment to extend the experience. It also allows seasoned individuals to approach the franchise with a new perspective, extending the universe. However, experience has shown that not all adaptations are successful. Indeed, when a new one is announced, a certain reserve may accompany the excitement of the moment.

In the case of the Call of Duty film adaptation, David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount, spoke last September to reassure fans. He stated that he is a "longtime fan," adding that "from the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, [he] has spent countless hours playing this franchise [he] loves." Activision and Paramount, who are working hand in hand on the project, emphasized his words by highlighting the commitment to "respect the narrative richness and distinctive style of the franchise." Even though nothing has leaked regarding the plot, the period covered, or other details, these few words are enough to fuel the hope of millions of players.

That said, before discovering the result of this live-action feature film, patience will be required. Indeed, the release date in theaters (at least in the US) has just been set for June 30, 2028. As releases traditionally occur on Wednesdays in France, similar to the last Super Mario Galaxy movie, the Call of Duty film could potentially premiere on June 28. In the meantime, there's no doubt that Activision and Paramount will communicate about the project in the coming months, notably to unveil a trailer and the cast.
